Facial Fillers Explained: Expert Insights on Oculofacial Plastics
Many individuals seek out cosmetic treatments to improve their appearance and self-confidence. Several of the most popular cosmetic services are performed by oculofacial surgeons. Oculofacial surgeons are specifically trained to perform procedures around the eyes and structures of the face.
If you’re considering these types of procedures, we are here to help you understand what each treatment is, how they work, and their potential side effects. The experts at Vistar Eye Center would like to give you a rundown of oculofacial plastics and how they may help you reach your goals.
What Are Oculofacial Plastics Services?
Oculofacial plastic services are often medically necessary to treat conditions such as drooping eyelids, blocked tear ducts, orbital fractures, and tumors around the eye. As trained microsurgeons, oculofacial surgeons have the expertise and experience to treat the most delicate structures of the eye and face.
Vistar Eye Center is proud to offer these services to residents of Southwest Virginia. Our expert oculofacial surgeon, Dr. Nicholas A. Ramey, specializes in cosmetic surgery and noninvasive treatments around the eyes and face, including upper and lower lid rejuvenation, BOTOX, and facial filler injections. Our Master Esthetician, Kathleen Gorman, provides a broad range of rejuvenating skin treatments, including lasers to reverse sun damage and scar tissue, facials, and hair removal.
The Oculofacial Plastics Experience
The entire Vistar team is committed to providing best-in-class service. We work together to make you feel comfortable in our care — from the initial consultation to your treatment time.
Our oculofacial surgeon, Dr. Ramey, specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive oculofacial surgery. He is driven by the joy of helping others. In medical school, he met a patient whose eye appearance caused such anxiety that she had difficulty interacting in social situations and maintaining a job. She underwent reconstructive oculofacial surgery, and her life was transformed.
Dr. Ramey was inspired by this and similar experiences and dedicated his career to improving lives by helping patients optimize their function and form. He employs the safest, least-invasive techniques necessary to achieve your desired results; your best interest is always at heart.
The Facts on Facial Fillers
Facial dermal filler injections are a terrific way to restore a youthful, fresh look without surgery. Together with a comprehensive skin care plan, dermal fillers can restore volume and smooth fine lines on your skin.
Facial fillers allow patients to rejuvenate the face without surgery. Modern dermal fillers use safe natural or biosynthetic substances that are gently injected under the skin’s surface. Fillers can be used to:
- Add volume to thinning skin
- Smooth wrinkles and creases
- Plump up your lips and cheeks
- Make your facial features more symmetrical
What Are the Benefits of Facial Fillers
Types of Facial Fillers
Facial dermal filler technology has improved significantly over the years. The most popular and safe modern dermal fillers use a biocompatible substance called hyaluronic acid. Some of the most popular brands include:
- Volbella®
- Juvederm®
- Voluma®
Vistar Eye Center proudly offers Volbella, Juvederm, and Voluma. These products can be combined or used individually in a personalized treatment plan designed to address your individual needs.
How Facial Fillers Work
Dermal fillers are strategically administered in target areas to create your desired results. Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm® work in two main ways. First, the injected filler binds to water in the skin, which leads to the expansion of the area. Second, they stimulate the body’s production of collagen to restore skin structure.
Potential Side Effects of Facial Fillers
Facial fillers are generally very safe; however, as with any cosmetic procedure, there are risks. After the procedure, it’s normal to experience some tenderness, bruising, or swelling at the injection site. These symptoms gradually subside. If you notice a rash, discoloration of the skin, or inflammation, these could be signs of serious side effects. These are uncommon but should be reported to your physician immediately. Choosing an experienced provider is extremely important to achieve natural-looking results with the safest techniques that can reduce the risks of serious complications.
Luckily, you can minimize the risk of side effects. Avoid using anti-inflammatory products like Ibuprofen or supplements like ginseng for about five days after your treatment, as these may cause an increased risk of bleeding or bruising. You should not smoke tobacco products if you are thinking about dermal fillers.
Recovery and Aftercare of Facial Fillers
The recovery time for fillers varies based on the type of filler injected and the individual undergoing the treatment. Most patients experience minimal downtime with a few days of bruising. We recommend avoiding strenuous physical activity and exercising for at least 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Excess pressure can cause product migration as well, so it’s best to avoid the following: Facials, Massages, and Microdermabrasion.
Dr. Ramey will provide more specific instructions for your unique treatment plan. It is vital to follow the aftercare instructions you receive to recover quickly and achieve optimal results.
